WOODBLOCK ICONS (2021 - present)
Woodblock printed icons were a significant part of the history of the monasteries in Mount Athos, as well as in Athonite commission hubs such as Venice, Vienna, and Moscow, and were at the height of popularity between the 17th and 19th century. Since the traditional process of creating icons was slow and laborious, the monks decided to create print reproductions of icons, using the up-to-date technology of the time, in order to help create supply for the huge demand for iconography, particularly for those who could not afford the hand-painted type. These digitally-created icons mimic the traditional Athonite woodblock prints, and I created them for the same purpose that the Athonite monks did. Although to a lesser degree than hand painted icons, the vital iconographic elements of man-made character, materiality, sense of presence, and adherence to traditional external form are still largely present in these icons.
